Our History

Founded in 1897 by Felix Martinez, the Telegraph quickly established itself as a trusted source of news, insight, and community engagement.

From our modest beginnings as a weekly publication, the Telegraph grew to become a daily staple in the lives of El Pasoans, chronicling the city’s triumphs and tribulations for over a century. Throughout our history, the newspaper has borne witness to the rise of industry, the numerous transitions in politics, and the evolution of society.

Martinez was a prominent businessman in the community, and recognized the need for reliable sources of news and information in El Paso. In 1897, he spearheaded the establishment of the newspaper under the El Paso Publishing Co., laying the foundation for what would become an enduring institution in the city’s history. Martinez’s unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity and his passion for serving the community fueled the Telegraph’s early years, shaping our identity as a trusted voice for generations to come.

Martinez was also the founder of the El Paso Realty Company, the organizer of the Southwestern Portland Cement Company, and served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of El Paso.
