Lizzo stunned her fans on Friday with a heartfelt announcement: she’s stepping away from the music industry.
In an emotional post on Instagram, the Grammy-winning artist expressed her exhaustion from enduring criticism both in her personal life and online.
“All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it,” she shared.
Despite her desire to spread joy through her music, Lizzo lamented the prevalence of what she perceives as falsehoods tarnishing her reputation. “But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it,” she confessed. “I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views.”
The decision comes amid legal battles, including allegations of sexual harassment from former dancers, claims which Lizzo vehemently denies. Additionally, another lawsuit alleges workplace bullying, harassment, and racial discrimination, further complicating her professional landscape.
In a statement dated March 29, Lizzo articulated her frustration with the constant scrutiny she faces, particularly regarding her appearance. “I’m tired of being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look… my character being picked apart by people who don’t know me and disrespecting my name,” she declared. “I didn’t sign up for this s—. I QUIT.”
Lizzo’s abrupt departure leaves many questions unanswered, as her team has yet to respond to inquiries regarding her decision.
Prior to this announcement, Lizzo’s presence extended beyond the music realm, with her involvement in political activities and her fashion venture, Yitty, gaining attention.
Recently, she participated in a fundraiser for President Joe Biden in New York City, showcasing her continued engagement beyond her musical endeavors.
Despite her exit from the music industry, Lizzo’s influence remains palpable. In an interview with the New York Times discussing her clothing brand’s new swimwear line, she emphasized her commitment to self-care, including a deliberate approach to managing her weight. However, she acknowledged the fluctuating nature of body positivity, admitting that some days are more challenging than others.
The decision to step away from music marks a significant shift for Lizzo, whose career has been characterized by her unapologetic presence and empowering message. As she navigates this new chapter, her fans await further insight into her future endeavors, hopeful that she will continue to inspire and uplift despite the challenges she faces.
