Governor Kathy Hochul encountered a chilly reception as she attended the wake of fallen New York police officer Jonathan Diller on Friday.
Hochul arrived at the wake around 1:45 p.m. and proceeded inside to meet with Stephanie, the widow of the slain officer. Witnesses noted a tense exchange between the 29-year-old widow and the Democratic governor.
According to CBS News New York, Hochul’s presence was met with disapproval by members of Diller’s family in attendance. As she exited the venue, individuals inside reportedly expressed their dissatisfaction, urging the governor to leave.
Despite differing accounts, one observer described a brief but respectful conversation between the governor and the young widow, touching on policy matters. Shortly thereafter, Hochul left the premises, having spent approximately 10 to 15 minutes inside.
Upon exiting, Hochul encountered a passionate individual who engaged with her emotionally. Following this interaction, she departed the scene accompanied by her escort. A video capturing her departure revealed some bystanders applauding as she left.
The tragic death of Officer Diller has reignited discussions on progressive crime policies, notably the bail reform law enacted in 2020. Critics argue that measures such as reducing cash bail and relaxing restrictions on suspects have contributed to the state’s recidivism issues.
During a press conference on Tuesday following Diller’s death, New York City Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the inadequacy of local laws in addressing significant crime-related challenges in New York.
